How tariff confidence works

1. Indicative estimate

Uses a rough average rate. Useful for a quick ballpark figure, but it may differ from your bill.

Current calculator status
2. Partially verified calculation

Uses tariff components checked against official sources, while unresolved rules are clearly disclosed.

Not yet enabled
3. Verified tariff calculation

Requires the applicable official schedule, effective date, provider, category, slabs, fixed charges and relevant adjustments to be verified and tested.

Not yet enabled

A provider name or a manually entered rate alone does not make a calculation verified. BijliCalc will only show a higher level when its supporting tariff data and billing rules have been checked.

Accuracy-first mode: this version calculates only the rate and charges you enter. It does not automatically apply verified state-wise slab schedules. For a closer match, enter the effective energy charge, fixed charge, duty, fuel adjustment, other charges and eligible subsidy from your bill or official tariff.

How is an electricity bill calculated?

A typical electricity bill can include energy charges based on units consumed, fixed or demand charges, fuel and power purchase adjustments, electricity duty or tax, meter-related charges, and eligible rebates or subsidies. The exact formula depends on your distribution company (DISCOM), tariff category, sanctioned load, billing period and official tariff order.

Basic estimate: energy charges are often calculated from units consumed multiplied by the applicable rate. Where the tariff uses slabs, each part of your consumption may have a different rate; a single average rate will not reproduce that slab calculation exactly.

  • Find units consumed (kWh) and tariff category on your latest bill.
  • Check your provider's official tariff schedule and its effective date.
  • Include applicable fixed charges, adjustments, duty and subsidy.
  • Compare this estimate with the final amount on your electricity bill.

BijliCalc uses the values entered in the calculator; it does not yet automatically calculate every state’s slab-wise tariff. Treat the result as an estimate and confirm your final amount with your electricity provider.

How to calculate your electricity bill

Adjust the rate and fixed charges if you know them. Review the breakdown and save or print it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check how many electricity units I used?

Look for “units consumed”, “kWh”, or the difference between current and previous meter readings on your electricity bill. One unit equals one kWh.

Why can my actual bill be different?

Electricity providers may apply slab-wise rates, fixed or demand charges, fuel adjustments, electricity duty, meter charges, arrears, and subsidies. This simple calculator does not automatically apply every provider-specific rule.

Is this an official electricity bill calculator?

No. BijliCalc is an independent estimation tool and is not affiliated with any DISCOM or government department. Check your provider's official tariff and bill for the final payable amount.

Can I use this for commercial connections?

You can select commercial as a rough planning estimate, but commercial tariffs vary significantly by provider, load and connection category. Enter the rate and charges from your own bill for a more useful estimate.

How to read an Indian electricity bill

Your total is not always simply units multiplied by one rate. A bill may combine energy charges, fixed or demand charges, duties, adjustment charges, arrears and credits. The exact items and formulas depend on the applicable tariff order and your connection type.

1. Check the billing period and units

Confirm the number of days covered and the consumption in kWh (units). A long or short billing period can affect slab calculations, minimum charges and comparisons with another month.

2. Confirm the connection category

Domestic, commercial, industrial and other categories may have different rates. Also check sanctioned load, single-phase/three-phase conditions and whether the provider bills on a low-tension or high-tension tariff.

3. Identify variable and fixed components

Energy charges are generally linked to consumption, while fixed charges may depend on load, connection category or billing period. Some tariffs use progressive slabs; others use different structures. Do not apply a generic slab method unless the official order specifies it.

4. Check adjustments and benefits

Fuel or power-purchase adjustments, electricity duty, meter-related charges, arrears, late fees, rebates and subsidies can materially change the total. Eligibility for a subsidy may depend on provider, consumer category, usage limit or other conditions.

5. Verify the source and date

Use the relevant State Electricity Regulatory Commission tariff order and your DISCOM's published schedule. Check the order's effective date and any later amendments or government subsidy notifications. Keep a copy of the source used for a calculation.

Important: BijliCalc currently helps with estimates using entered values and indicative defaults. It does not yet automate every provider-specific tariff rule. For an official amount, use the bill issued by your electricity provider.

State-wise electricity tariff coverage

Choose from states and Union Territories across India and open the relevant regulator or electricity department website to check current rates. Tariffs can vary by DISCOM, domestic or commercial category, sanctioned load, consumption slab and billing period. This calculator currently uses the rates and charges you enter rather than automatically applying every official tariff schedule.

About BijliCalc

BijliCalc is an independent Indian electricity-bill estimation and tariff-literacy project. It is designed to help households, tenants, small businesses and other users understand the main components that can affect an electricity bill. BijliCalc is not a government service, electricity distribution company (DISCOM), regulator or billing authority.

What you can do here

  • Estimate a bill from units consumed and the rates and charges entered.
  • Review common bill components such as energy charges, fixed charges, adjustments and subsidy credits.
  • Find official tariff sources and learn what to check before relying on an estimate.

How we approach accuracy

Electricity tariffs differ by state, distribution company, connection category, sanctioned load, consumption slab, billing period and effective date. A state selection or an indicative average rate is not proof that an official tariff has been implemented. We aim to label estimates honestly, link to primary sources where available, document assumptions and test calculation rules against suitable bill examples before describing a calculation as verified.

At present, the calculator should be treated as an estimate tool. It does not automatically apply every official slab schedule, subsidy, duty, fuel adjustment, demand charge or special billing rule. Please compare its result with your current bill and the applicable tariff order.

Editorial independence and corrections

We welcome corrections supported by an official tariff order, regulator notification or a suitably redacted bill. Never send an unredacted bill containing your name, address, account number, meter number, QR code or other identifying information.

The calculator does not issue an official bill, determine legal tariff entitlement or replace the bill issued by your electricity provider.

Estimates are not guaranteed bills

Results depend on the inputs you provide and the calculation features currently implemented. The tool may not include every applicable energy slab, minimum charge, fixed charge, demand charge, load or phase condition, electricity duty, tax, fuel/power-purchase adjustment, meter charge, time-of-day rate, arrear, late fee, rebate, subsidy, deposit, rounding rule or other tariff condition. The same state may have multiple providers and tariff categories.

Tariff sources and effective dates

Tariffs and government subsidies can change. Where a rate is labelled indicative, treat it only as a rough planning assumption.

No accuracy promise

BijliCalc does not guarantee that any result will match the amount payable on your bill and does not claim a particular percentage of accuracy unless a specific, documented validation method and results are published. The provider-issued bill and applicable official rules control the final payable amount.
